Always. Be. Better.

Trek to Kagot. Do some Good.
The Big Cause: September 2024. Give children at a remote Himalayan school access to computers and the Internet.
This is what it's all about. Doing some good. We'll take computers and satellite internet equipment to a remote school in the Himalayas. Sally and Melissa (Sal and Mel) will spend time at the school setting the computers and equipment up and training the teachers and kids on how to use the equipment to access the Internet.
Trek to Putha Hiunchuli. Break a World Record.
The Big Project: September 2024. Break the Guinness World Record for the highest bicycle ride.
To set a big record, you need a big mountain. This is Putha Hiunchuli, part of the Dhaulagiri range in Nepal. It stands at 7,246M and if we summit and ride our bikes down will mean we set a new Guinness World Record for the highest bicycle ride. This is what I'm training for.
if it was easy everyone would do it
Come along for the ride as I prepare for the toughest thing I've done.
I'm on a mission to get fitter, physically and mentally. This project provides a central focus and goal. Achieve the goal, achieve the outcome.
3 December 2023 - The Goodwood Half-marathon.
The Goodwood Half-marathon is my starter goal. I've never been a runner, although I do have a legacy of failed stop-start Park Runs over the last 10 tears. I've been running for 3 months now, easily the longest stretch I've managed to maintain. Lets see how we do on this one!
January 2024 - Winter Mountaineering Course
Scotland, here I come. Whilst I trekked up Kilimanjaro in December 2011, there was little technical climbing involved. For the climb up Putha Hiunchuli, we'll need more traditional, basic mountaineering skills, such as roping up, using an ice axe, crevasse rescue and so on.
10 March 2024 - Cape Town Cycle Tour, 109km
This is a favourite. I have a few of these under my belt, but this one will be slightly different. I won't have the time to train on the bike as much as I'd like, so I will have to rely on my marathon training instead. That being said, I will try to set a PB here, wind permitting.
14 April 2024 - Manchester Marathon
This is a primary goal for me. Getting my fitness level up to Marathon distance by April will put me on the right trajectory for the big climb. I'm hoping to get home in under four and a half hours as a B goal and under four hours as an A goal.
May 2024 - Climb Mera Peak, 6,476m
Ideally, I'd like to put some training into action. This objective is a nice to have. Mera Peak requires some basic mountaineering skills, so it would be great to practice. You're roped up for a couple of days, and it's sufficiently high to test myself at altitude. The time at altitude will not go astray when tackling Putha Hiunchuli later!
July 2024 - Ultra Marathon, 100km
Building endurance. The last thing I'd want to be is the weak link in a team climb, so it's important to control the controllable and my fitness is the one thing that's all up to me! Based on the expected calorific expenditure on Summit Day and the leadup to it the ability to run 100KM in a single stretch seems like an adequate target.
It takes an army

Always be better is a motto I try to live my life by. It's a tough gig, getting better. It requires discipline and resolve. If, like me, you don't like being told what to do then you can imagine the internal dialogues I have with myself. If it was easy everyone would be the best they can be.
